Seminar #3: Bridging Gaps- Narrative Understanding and Ethical Conflict During the COVID Era

Seminar Guest Speaker: Professor Lauren Mitchell

Seminar Description: The COVID pandemic is widely recognized as a catalyst for a societal deepening ideological polarization, often brought forth by individual anxieties over the ramifications of the disease. This workshop will utilize Narrative Medicine—the praxis-based arm of Medical Humanities—to parse out the nuances of how individual turmoils, which are unable to be totalized into any one monolithic fear or concern, come to inform macro-level moral hysteria and fear. To that end, this workshop endeavors to provide participants with skills in narrative analysis that help determine how individual understanding of one's own ethics and values intersect with those that structure policy and practice.

Seminar #4: Pandemic preparedness- from basic science to antiviral drug and vaccine development

Seminar Guest Speaker: Dr. Lars Plate

When: Friday October 13th (9:30-10:30 am CST)

Seminar Description: One theme that emerged during the early COVID pandemic was that prior basic science efforts proved incredibly valuable for the rapid development of therapeutics. Structural biology studies on coronavirus spike proteins informed the design of vaccine constructs, lipid nanoparticle engineering was critical for mRNA vaccine formulation, and antiviral drug leads already excited against multiple viral protein targets. At the same time, rapid initiatives were deployed to identify monoclonal antibody therapeutics and to map host-virus interactions (including work from my own research group) to repurpose existing drugs as host-targeted therapeutics. The goal of the session will be to review a few case studies and reflect on what we can learn for pandemic preparedness to brace ourselves against future pathogens.

Seminar #6: Evolution of Research after the Pandemic

Seminar Guest Speaker: Dr. Keri Tallman

When: Friday October 13th (2:15-3:15 pm CST)

Seminar Description: Early in the COVID pandemic, research was occurring at a rapid pace to understand the virus and develop testing, therapeutics, and eventually a vaccine. During that time, some researchers were reevaluating their own research in the hope of contributing to these goals. As a result of COVID research, mRNA technology was used to create an effective vaccine and monoclonal antibodies as a therapeutic. This seminar will explore how some research groups reimagined their own work that they had already been carrying out with a new application, including work that my group had already been working on for years. We will also explore how the technology and scientific knowledge that has emerged from COVID research is being pursued in other areas to benefit society.
